NOT DROWNING, WAVING + TELEK

AUSTRALIA/PAPUA NEW GUINEA

PERFORMANCES

Saturday, 5pm, Bowl Stage
Sunday, 2pm, Gables Stage

Melbourne’s art-rock pioneers Not Drowning, Waving, led by David Bridie, reunite with renowned Papua New Guinean musician George Telek to celebrate 35 years of Tabaran. Inspired by the rhythms of Rabaul, a culturally-rich town in PNG, the album fuses the band’s avant-garde pop-rock with local harmonies, melodies, and instruments. Their WOMAD Aotearoa performance unites original Tabaran musicians with dynamic new talent from PNG and Australia, honouring both the album’s legacy and PNG’s upcoming 50th anniversary of independence. Don’t miss this extraordinary cross-cultural collaboration.

ARTIST WORKSHOP

Join George Telek, Danielle Morgan, and David Bridie as they explore the collaborative journey behind Tabaran — a fusion of contemporary sounds from Papua New Guinea and Australia. Marking 50 years of PNG’s independence, they’ll discuss the album’s cultural significance and creative process, bringing it to life with live vocals and the rhythms of traditional PNG drums.

Sunday, 4-5pm, Te Paepae Stage
