Kia ora e te whānau,
We want to share some important news with you, our festival community. After much reflection and many thoughtful kōrero, we’ve made the incredibly tough decision to take a rest year in 2026. This is not a decision we made lightly. Like many festivals across Aotearoa and around the world, we are navigating a challenging climate. Rising costs and shifting conditions mean that pressing pause for one year is the most responsible step we can take to protect the future of WOMAD Aotearoa, and ensure it continues to be the exceptional festival you know and love.
We also know how important WOMAD is beyond the festival gates. It brings people together, celebrates culture, and makes a vital contribution to the economy to New Plymouth and the wider region. At such a difficult time for everyone, we want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to encourage our partners to stand with us so that we can continue to support our community in return.
This decision comes from a place of deep care for our people and a commitment to the long-term sustainability of both the festival and the cultural economy of Taranaki. Taking this rest year allows us to focus on planning, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring WOMAD remains an accessible, world-class celebration of music, arts, and culture.
We’re so grateful for your ongoing support, aroha, and trust. WOMAD has always been more than a festival — it’s a whānau. We look forward to the time when we can gather again to celebrate music, arts, and dance from around the globe, right here in Aotearoa.
With love and gratitude. Nga mihi nui.
